FOSTIN Nshimirimana was four when he was snatched from his Burundian family by rebel forces and forced to become a child soldier.
He was trained as a soldier for nine years before fleeing to a refugee camp in Tanzania in 2006.
Arriving in Australia in 2007, Mr Nshimirimana, now 19, has come a long way since his harrowing childhood in Africa, where he used hip-hop song and dance to escape from the fear that stifled him daily.
“Every day I would think, will I die today?
Will I get shot?,” he says.
The Kings Park resident was named Brimbank’s young citizen of the year on Australia Day. The award recognised his poetry and contribution to the dance and hip-hop scene in Brimbank and his work mentoring other young migrants.
“Music has always been a way to escape and forget my past,” he says.
“I first became interested in hip-hop in Tanzania during my days spent at the camp.
